Hugh Jackman Joins Ball State Class of 2026 at Spring Commencement

Actor Hugh Jackman addressing Ball State’s Class of 2026

Award-winning actor Hugh Jackman addressed Ball State’s Class of 2026, received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree, and deepened his connection with the University.

“G’day, Ball State!”

With that greeting, Hugh Jackman brought a little Australia—and plenty of star power—to Ball State University’s Spring Commencement in May, where approximately 7,500 graduates, faculty, staff, family members, and guests gathered on the Quad to celebrate the Class of 2026.

During the University-wide ceremony, Ball State conferred approximately 2,800 degrees. Mr. Jackman became a Ball State graduate himself when the University bestowed upon him an honorary doctor of arts degree in recognition of his lifelong accomplishments and passion for the arts.

The ceremony marked the latest chapter in Mr. Jackman’s deepening connection with Ball State. He first visited campus last Fall with Tony Award-winning Broadway actress Sutton Foster, ArtD ’12, who also serves as an instructor in the University’s Department of Theatre and Dance. During that visit, Mr. Jackman engaged with theatre students, attended a student production, and toured the University’s new Performing Arts Center. He later returned to Muncie to host a special early screening of his film Song Sung Blue.

In his Commencement address, Mr. Jackman encouraged graduates to trust their instincts, embrace uncertainty, and seek lives of purpose rather than simply chasing conventional success.

In the days that followed, President Geoffrey S. Mearns—whom Mr. Jackman affectionately referred to as “Mearnsy” throughout his speech—said the actor’s presence made an already meaningful Commencement even more memorable.

“His participation elevated this special occasion, while keeping the focus where it belongs—on our graduates and the family members, friends, and faculty and staff who supported them.
